Respect for the Person
Every person deserves to have their experience heard, respected and considered.
Created for the global Tobacco Harm Reduction community, this symbol represents people, evidence, compassion, autonomy and the belief that reducing harm is a cause worth defending.
A universal symbol created for the global Tobacco Harm Reduction community.
The meaning
This symbol was created to represent something missing in the global conversation around Tobacco Harm Reduction: a simple, recognisable mark that belongs to the people whose lives have been touched by the movement and the communities working to reduce the harms caused by smoking.
It is intended to honour those who found a way out of combustible tobacco, those who still struggle, and those who believe that evidence, compassion and informed choice should remain at the centre of public health.
The symbol belongs to the cause. And the cause belongs to the people.
Five principles
The five points represent a practical and human framework for harm reduction, rooted in respect for people and a commitment to evidence.
Every person deserves to have their experience heard, respected and considered.
Meaningful discussion depends on reliable information, structured data and honest lived experience.
The focus is reducing the harms associated with smoking and combustible tobacco use.
People should have access to information and freedom to make informed decisions about their own lives.
Different communities face different realities. Effective harm reduction must recognise context and geography.

How to use it
The symbol may be used by individuals, advocates, researchers, organisations and communities who want to identify work connected to Tobacco Harm Reduction.
The symbol should not be used to divide, attack, misrepresent evidence or place commercial interests above human ones.
“Behind every statistic is a human being. A mother. A father. A son. A daughter. A friend. A colleague. A neighbour. A life.”
Tobacco Harm Reduction is ultimately about people, dignity, compassion and reducing suffering.
